TO THE WEST, IN ZAPATA

[AL OESTE, EN ZAPATA]
Deep inside Cuba’s Zapata Swamp, Landi hunts crocodiles armed with nothing but his hands and a bit of rope — dangerous and illegal work that he undertakes to feed his family amid the COVID-19 pandemic and the crumbling Cuban economic system. His wife, Mercedes, resides at home, caring for their autistic son and worrying over her husband’s safety, unsure if this will be the time he does not return. Brimming with striking black-and-white imagery and evocative foley work, this stark yet empathetic documentary from filmmaker David Bim, who also served as cinematographer and editor, is a wholly empathetic chronicle of a family who must go to extreme lengths to survive. –Javier Chavez
