A BRIGHT FUTURE
[UN FUTURO BRILLANTE]
In the dystopian near-future setting of Lucía Garibaldi’s sophomore feature, pets are extinct, ants run amok and 18-year-old Elisa (Martina Passeggi) is selected to go work in the North — a purported promised land where a chosen few go but none ever return. Elisa’s own sister went there years ago, and her mother enters the work lottery, eager to reunite the family. Yet, despite the privilege bestowed on Elisa and the honor her selection brings to her hometown, the clever young woman’s curiosity leads her to question whether the North is truly a heralded paradise. A surreal, low-fi sci-fi allegory, A BRIGHT FUTURE is a timely critique of capitalism, the obsession with youth and the incessant push for “productivity” at all costs. –Javier Chavez
