Drag club owner Armand (Robin Williams) and his partner and star performer Albert (Nathan Lane) have a good life in Miami, and Armand’s son is set to bring home his fiancée to meet the folks. The only problem? His future father-in-law (Gene Hackman) is a conservative senator and staunch “family values” advocate. The film features brilliant turns by Williams and Lane, and Hackman is no slouch either, turning in a memorable performance that proved his virtuosity as a comic actor. A hilarious remake of the 1978 film LA CAGE AUX FOLLES, THE BIRDCAGE found director Mike Nichols working with a script by his former performing partner (and director in her own right) Elaine May. DIR/PROD Mike Nichols; SCR Elaine May, from the 1978 film LA CAGE AUX FOLLES, screenplay by Marcello Danon, Édouard Molinaro, Jean Poiret and Francis Veber, based on Poiret’s play.
