THE EXILES
[LOS TORTUGA]
Pablo Larraín regular Antonia Zegers (THE CLUB, A FANTASTIC WOMAN, EL CONDE) stars in a touching two-hander about a mother and daughter reeling from a grievous loss and financial hardship. Delia (Zegers), a Chilean immigrant, drives a taxi across Barcelona to support herself and her college-bound daughter, Anabel (newcomer Elvira Lara), after the sudden death of Julián, her Spanish husband. Though mother and daughter love each other, they process their grief differently: Anabel wishes to honor her father’s passing while Delia withdraws and wants to move on. When they receive an eviction notice, the two women must decide whether to sell Julián’s beloved olive grove in Andalusia. Filmmaker Bélen Funes, whose 2019 debut A THIEF’S DAUGHTER won her the Goya Award for Best New Director, has crafted a poignant exploration of grief rooted in a stark yet sincere realism and anchored by two stellar performances from Zegers and Lara.
