Hailed as the “Nan Goldin of Soviet Prague,” Libuše Jarcovjáková is a radical photographer who documented her own life as a teenager and beyond during the period of “normalization” in Czechoslovakia after 1968’s Prague Spring. From her days working in a printing factory to nights spent joy-seeking in clubs to trysts with both male and female lovers and onward to her life in Japan and West Germany, Jarcovjáková’s still images capture one woman’s yearning for emancipation and identity that reverberates across time. Using Jarcovjáková’s photographs and diary entries — which Jarcovjáková reads aloud herself — filmmaker Klára Tasovská tells the story of a singular artist using her own radical style. By repeating images in quick succession to give a quasi-animated feel, enhancing the imagery with textured sound effects that evoke the scenes depicted and overlaying a minimalist, dance-inducing film score by Oliver Torr, Prokop Korb (badfocus) and Adam Matej, Tasovská creates a deeply cinematic, dynamic and intimate portrait of a brilliant artist and woman. –Javier Chavez
