GOODBYE JULIA

Special Features: Opening Night. 2024 Oscar® Selection, Sudan

[وداعا جوليا]
Wracked by guilt after covering up a man's murder, Mona (Eiman Yousif), a wealthy Muslim retired singer from northern Sudan, tries to make amends by taking in the deceased's widow, Julia (Siran Riak), a poor Christian from southern Sudan, and their young son. Unable to confess her involvement to Julia, Mona decides to leave the past behind and adjust to a new status quo, unaware that the country's turmoil may find its way into her home and put her face-to-face with her sins. Set on the precipice of Sudan's major split in 2011, filmmaker Mohamed Kordofani's rich moral drama deftly explores the personal and political divide and features complex performances from its two female leads. Official Selection, 2023 Cannes Film Festival. (Note adapted from Mad Distribution.) DIR/SCR Mohamed Kordofani; PROD Amjad Abu Alala.
