THE LADY (1925) + Hollywood Home Movies #3

New Restoration; U.S. Premiere
THE LADY (1925)
Introduction by film historian Richard Koszarski; live piano accompaniment by Jon Mirsalis
The films of actor-turned-director Frank Borzage were synonymous with lush romantic melodramas known more for precise performances and emotional resonance than the logic of their plots. Borzage derived a career-best performance from actress Norma Talmadge in this maternal melodrama, as tragedy and circumstance lead her character to evolve from showgirl to cabaret entertainer, then, after tragedy, to become a flower woman of the London streets and, finally, the proprietoress of a tavern. THE LADY has been rarely shown because extant prints were missing a reel. With the recent identification of that footage, the film has now been restored to its original length. The film was the major discovery of the Norma Talmadge program at the 2022 Pordenone Silent Film Festival. This screening is the U.S. premiere of the Library of Congress restoration. DIR Frank Borzage; SCR Frances Marion, from the play by Martin Brown; PROD Norma Talmadge. U.S., 1925, b&w, 90 min. NOT RATED
