JOHANNA ENLISTS (1918)

JOHANNA ENLISTS (1918)

Special Features: Introduction by film historian Richard Koszarski; live piano accompaniment by Andrew Simpson

JOHANNA ENLISTS is an atypical film for screen icon Mary Pickford, a comedy-drama focused on the impact of the First World War on the homefront. The quiet life of farmgirl Johanna (Pickford, in a restrained performance) is uprooted when a battalion of soldiers sets up camp nearby. Screenwriter Frances Marion built the story around Pickford's character's reaction to the changes, her gradual maturity and her dawning awareness of boys, tenderness and commitment. DIR William Desmond Taylor; SCR Frances Marion, from the story "The Mobilization of Johanna" by Rupert Hughes; PROD Mary Pickford. U.S., 1918, b&w, 64 min. NOT RATED
Preserved by the Library of Congress in 1948, this restoration uses titles and stills to cover a short section of missing footage. DCP from the Mary Pickford Foundation.
