CHOCOLAT (1988)

Special Features: New 4K Restoration; 35th Anniversary

Master filmmaker Claire Denis (BEAU TRAVAIL, WHITE MATERIAL) drew on her own childhood experiences growing up in colonial French Africa for her multilayered, languorously absorbing feature debut, which explores many of the themes that would recur throughout her later work. Returning to the Cameroonian town where she grew up after many years living in France, a white woman (Mireille Perrier) reflects on her relationship with Protée (Isaach De Bankolé), a Black servant with whom she formed a friendship as a child while not fully grasping the racial divides that governed their worlds. (Note adapted from Janus Films.) DIR/SCR Claire Denis; SCR Jean-Pol Fargeau; PROD Alain Belmondo, Gérard Crosnier. France/West Germany/Cameroon, 1988, color, 105 min. In English and French with English subtitles. RATED PG-13
