HUSTLE (2022)
When veteran Philadelphia '76ers scout Stanley Sugarman (Adam Sandler) spots Bo Cruz (the NBA's Juancho Hernangomez) playing a game of street basketball in Spain, he thinks he may have found the league's next Lebron (who incidentally produced the film) and makes it his mission to groom the young star for the NBA. But with a troubled past and no traditional training, the two men face an uphill battle to get Cruz drafted. Filmmaker Jeremiah Zagar follows up his Sundance breakthrough WE THE ANIMALS with this rousing, crowd-pleasing sports drama, complete with inspirational training montage. First-time actor Hernangomez builds a charming rapport with Sandler, who delivers a winning performance in the same register as UNCUT GEMS and PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE. A bevy of NBA stars both past and present co-star alongside Queen Latifah, Ben Foster and Robert Duvall.
