In a role which was the apotheosis of his career, the great Everyman actor Takashi Shimura plays Kanji Watanabe, a 30-year veteran City Hall bureaucrat who, after a terminal cancer diagnosis, comes to appreciate his life for the first time. Ingeniously structured in two parts — Watanabe’s final months, with a mix of hard reflection, carefree spontaneity and inspired last-gasp effort; and in flashback as his colleagues attempt to imperfectly understand the man and his actions — Kurosawa’s moving film ranks among his finest achievements. Roger Ebert notably said, “I think this is one of the few movies that might actually be able to inspire someone to lead their life a little differently.” DIR/SCR Akira Kurosawa; SCR Shinobu Hashimoto, Hideo Oguni; PROD Sōjirō Motoki.
