ALMA VIVA
Special Features: U.S. Premiere. 2023 Oscar® Selection, Portugal
Young Salomé is sent to live with her grandmother Avo in the remote Trás-os-Montes region of Portugal, while her mother works in France. Avo has long practiced minor-league sorcery in her community, dispensing advice and the occasional charm or potion to her fellow villagers. When Avo suddenly dies, her far-flung family reunites and immediately sets to squabbling over their matriarch's meager fortune, only to be shamed and set right by Salomé, now channeling the spirit of her deceased grandmother. Cristèle Alves Meira's engaging debut feature, starring her daughter Lua Michel as Salomé, makes witty and humorous use of magical realism to explore the all-too-real challenges of economic hardship in contemporary Portugal. Official Selection, 2022 Cannes Film Festival. DIR/SCR Cristèle Alves Meira; SCR Laurent Lunetta; PROD Pedro Borges, Gaëlle Mareschi. Portugal/Belgium/France, 2022, color, 85 min. In Portuguese and French with English subtitles. NOT RATED
