Based on the beloved novels by Vilhelm Moberg, Norwegian director Erik Poppe's (THE KING'S CHOICE, UTØYA: JULY 22) new adaptation of the classic Swedish epic — the tale of a poverty-stricken family making their way to and in America during the mid-19th century — centers firmly on the women in the story. Kristina (THE TUNNEL's Lisa Carlehed, in the role played by Liv Ullmann in Jan Troell's Oscar®-nominated 1971 adaptation) is a wife and mother who initially rejects her husband Karl's (Gustaf Skarsgård, TV's VIKINGS) proposal to move their impoverished family to America. But when tragedy strikes, compounding their growing sense of desperation, she agrees to set out on the long, dangerous journey across the Atlantic to what she prays will be a better life in Minnesota. With an ensemble cast featuring Swedish pop sensation Tove Lo, Sofia Helin (TV's THE BRIDGE) and Lena Strömdahl (THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO), THE EMIGRANTS is both highly specific to Swedish history, and a timeless and timely story about the immigrant experience and female solidarity.
