TALKING ABOUT THE WEATHER

[ALLE REDEN ÜBERS WETTER]
Philosophy PhD candidate Clara (Anne Schäfer) navigates the heady waters of elite academic life in Berlin, sharing a modest flat with multiple roommates while attending swanky faculty functions at the homes of posh professors. Her doctoral advisor Margot (Judith Hofmann), an accomplished academic with a battle-hardened heart and mind, navigates departmental intrigues both small and large with sardonic flair, and expects Clara to understand that this is the way to climb the ladder. But Clara grew up in the former East Germany, where her mother still lives, as do her ex (Ronald Zehrfeld) and teenaged daughter. A visit home provides a powerful reminder of how different life is for people in her home region even now, a generation since German unification. The conflicting emotions felt by those who have left home and family, and the vastly different qualities of life experienced between those striving and merely surviving, are explored in Annika Pinske's sharply observed drama. Official Selection, 2022 Berlin, New Directors/New Films and Seattle film festivals. DIR/SCR Annika Pinske; SCR Johannes Flachmeyer; PROD Luise Hauschild. Germany, 2022, color, 89 min.
