WE MIGHT AS WELL BE DEAD
[WIR KÖNNTEN GENAUSO GUT TOT SEIN]
Romanian actress Ioana Iacob gives a magnetic performance as Anna, the head of security at a mysterious high-rise apartment building that stands alone at the edge of a wood. The building's diverse residents have all chosen to live in this "house community" and turn away from the chaos that's believed to be roiling the outside world — only vaguely defined and taken as an article of faith. But keeping this community's residents happy and cooperative proves to be a challenge. Natalia Sinelnikova's impressive debut film — her Babelsberg film school graduation project, no less — is an assured and darkly comic allegory reminiscent of both the Greek Weird Wave and J. G. Ballard's transgressive futurism. "[A] strikingly original, elegantly shot and designed and admirably controlled dystopian satire about the world's current retreat from rational discourse toward paranoia-fueled tribalism." – Screen International. Official Selection, 2022 Berlin, Tribeca and Fantastic Fest film festivals. DIR/SCR Natalia Sinelnikova; SCR Viktor Gallandi; PROD Julia Wagner. Germany/Romania, 2022, color, 93 min.
