SAMURAI REBELLION in 35mm
[JÔI-UCHI: HAIRYÔ TSUMA SHIMATSU] [上意討ち 拝領妻始末]
Here is one of cinema’s greatest images: the wounded Isaburo Sasahara (Toshiro Mifune) bracing himself to rise with his sword. In this story, social critic Masaki Kobayashi (HARAKIRI, THE HUMAN CONDITION) makes another devastating attack on feudalism through the tale of an aging swordsman who takes a last stand against injustice. A clan lord forces the son of Sasahara (Mifune) to marry his discarded mistress — but then demands her return. The tension explodes in Sasahara’s powerful stand against his best friend, fellow swordsman Tatewaki Asano (Tatsuya Nakadai, in one of his many collaborations with Kobayashi). DIR Masaki Kobayashi; SCR Shinobu Hashimoto, from the short story by Yasuhiko Takiguchi; PROD Tomoyuki Tanaka, Toshiro Mifune. Japan, 1967, b&w, 121 min. In Japanese with English subtitles. NOT RATED
