[TSUBAKI SANJŪRŌ] [椿三十郎]
“You tired of being stupid yet?” After the enormous popularity of YOJIMBO, Akira Kurosawa followed with this sequel, pushing even further into all-out comedy. Toshirō Mifune reprises his role as the in-it-for-himself swordsman, this time happening upon a town torn between two rival politicians. When a youthful squad of untested samurai seeks to throw its support behind the seemingly more magnanimous of the two leaders, the wised-up Sanjūrō investigates, lending the youths his expertise with the blade and his equally sharp-tongued advice. Tatsuya Nakadai, who also starred in YOJIMBO, returns playing a different character: the deadly samurai Hanbei Muroto, whose climactic duel with Sanjūrō is a tense battle ending in an unforgettable — and literal — geyser of blood. DIR/SCR Akira Kurosawa; SCR/PROD Ryūzō Kikushima; SCR Hideo Oguni, from the novel “Peaceful Days” by Shūgorō Yamamoto; PROD Tomoyuki Tanaka. Japan, 1962, b&w, 96 min.
