MIRACLE WORKER, THE (1962)
Special Features: 60th Anniversary
After winning a Tony Award® for directing "The Miracle Worker" on Broadway, Arthur Penn (BONNIE AND CLYDE) returned alongside screenwriter William Gibson to adapt Helen Keller's biography into a feature film for United Artists. Penn insisted on keeping the magnificent Broadway cast (Patty Duke as Keller and Anne Bancroft as her dedicated teacher Anne Sullivan), even though the studio would have preferred Elizabeth Taylor in the role of Sullivan. Filmed in New York and New Jersey, standing in for Tuscumbia, Alabama, the film was nominated for five Academy Awards® and Duke and Bancroft won Best Supporting Actress and Best Actress respectively for their spark-filled, sensitive performances.
