INHERENT VICE in 70mm
Paul Thomas Anderson’s inspired adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s humorous “surf noir” novel features Joaquin Phoenix as Doc Sportello, a “stoner detective” on par with the greatest snoops of the quirky subgenre, from Elliott Gould’s Philip Marlowe in Robert Altman’s THE LONG GOODBYE to Jeff Bridges’ “The Dude” in the Coen brothers’ THE BIG LEBOWSKI. Doc’s ex-old lady Shasta (Katherine Waterston) drops in unannounced at his beach house telling a wild story about her current lover, real estate magnate Mickey Wolfmann (Eric Roberts), and a plot by Mickey’s wife and her lover to have Mickey committed to an insane asylum. From there, Doc becomes embroiled in a twisty mystery that involves dirty cops, drug-dealing dentists, cults, killers and some very kooky comedy. Phoenix’s performance as Doc exudes goofy charm, with a doggedness beneath his insouciance. The wonderful ensemble cast includes Josh Brolin, Owen Wilson, Benicio del Toro, Reese Witherspoon, Jena Malone, Joanna Newsom, Hong Chau, Jeannie Berlin, Maya Rudolph, Michael K. Williams and Martin Short. DIR/SCR/PROD Paul Thomas Anderson, from the novel by Thomas Pynchon; PROD Daniel Lupi, JoAnne Sellar. U.S., 2014, color, 148 min. RATED R
