EROTIKON (1920)
Special Features: Silent with live musical accompaniment by Andrew Simpson
Etymologist Anders de Wahl seems more interested in his bugs than his neglected wife Tora Teje, so she enjoys the attentions of both aviator Vilhelm Bryde and sculptor Lars Hanson, the latter also her husband's best friend. Meanwhile, de Wahl appears to be overly fond of his niece, Karin Molander. A landmark accomplishment in the history of Swedish cinema, EROTIKON represents an early pinnacle in screen Modernism and the full flowering of the genius of filmmaker Mauritz Stiller (THE FLAME OF LIFE, SIR ARNE'S TREASURE). Working with a generous budget, Stiller combines the elegant entertainment of its high society setting; elaborate spectacle, including the ballet à clef "Schaname," performed by the Royal Swedish Ballet and 800 extras; and earthy eroticism, in its comically complex web of besotted suitors and sneaky infidelities. DIR/SCR Mauritz Stiller; SCR Gustaf Molander, Arthur Nordén, from the play "A kék róka" by Ferenc Herczeg; PROD Charles Magnusson. Sweden, 1920, b&w, 106 min. Silent with English intertitles.
