NEO-TOKYO IS ABOUT TO E.X.P.L.O.D.E. Katsuhiro Ōtomo’s landmark cyberpunk film, adapted from his own six-volume manga, paved the way for anime outside Japan. Set in 2019, in the aftermath of World War III, it chronicles the clash between best friends Shōtarō Kaneda and Tetsuo Shima as the latter develops psychic abilities following an encounter with a mysterious child. Tetsuo’s newfound powers attract the attention of a secret government project directed by the Japan Self-Defense Forces, who kidnap the teen and experiment on him until he breaks loose and wreaks havoc across Neo-Tokyo. As Tetsuo’s power grows and he leaves dozens dead in his wake, Kaneda is determined to save his friend — even if it means killing him. With its meticulously illustrated animation, iconic character designs and score heavily influenced by Indonesian gamelan and Japanese Noh, AKIRA is the rare film that transcended cult-classic status to become a staple of its genre whose influence is ubiquitous across the world (the oft-imitated bike slide, as one example). DIR/SCR Katsuhiro Ōtomo; SCR Izō Hashimoto; PROD Shunzō Katō, Ryōhei Suzuki. Japan, 1988, color, 124 min. In Japanese with English subtitles. RATED R
