FOLLOW THRU (1930)
Special Features: 95th Anniversary | World Premiere of New Digital Restoration | Introduction by film historian Farran Smith Nehme
A wild and delightfully racy pre-Code musical comedy with a golf twist, FOLLOW THRU swings into the spotlight in a stunning new digital restoration — in two-color Technicolor! Adapted from the 1929 Broadway hit, the story follows a spirited young golfer (the effervescent Nancy Carroll, radiant in color) as she is pursued by a charming golf pro (Buddy Rogers). Meanwhile, comic sidekicks (Jack Haley and Zelma O’Neal, reprising their Broadway roles) steal scenes with their sharp timing and nimble dance routines. Thelma Todd adds extra spice as a wealthy widow and golf champion on the hunt — for both trophies and men. The film features iconic songs like “Button Up Your Overcoat” and the outrageous showstopper “I Want to Be Bad,” where angels are seduced into becoming dancing devils before a cherubic fire brigade comes to the rescue. Filled with racy dialogue, lush Technicolor and sunny Palm Springs locations, this is one of the boldest and most beloved musicals of the early 1930s. As Motion Picture Herald put it in 1931, “If they have ever made a picture that contained more risqué scenes and suggestions than this one, it must have been our fortune to have dodged ’em.” DIR/SCR/PROD Laurence Schwab; DIR/SCR Lloyd Corrigan; SCR from the musical by Schwab, Buddy G. DeSylva, Lew Brown and Ray Henderson; PROD Frank Mandel. U.S., 1930, color, 92 min. NOT RATED
