THE SWORD OF DOOM in 35mm

[DAI-BOSATSU TÔGE] [大菩薩峠]
“The sword is the soul. Study the soul to know the sword. Evil mind, evil sword.” Edgy, intense and unhinged, Tatsuya Nakadai gives one of his greatest performances in this cult classic samurai spectacular. Nakadai plays Ryunosuke Tsukue, a master swordsman during Japan’s Edo period, possessed of great skill but strangely soulless and lacking a moral compass. In exile after his affair with a colleague’s wife leads to a fatal duel, the rōnin Ryunosuke falls in with a murderous militia of the Tokugawa shogunate. But for Ryunosuke, there is no escaping his demons, or his own thirst for combat. Superstar Toshirō Mifune makes the most of his supporting role as an assassin, going all out in one of director Kihachi Okamoto’s trademark one-against-all sword fights. DIR Kihachi Okamoto; SCR Shinobu Hashimoto, from the novel by Kaizan Nakazato; PROD Sanezumi Fujimoto, Konparu Nanri, Masayuki Satō. Japan, 1966, b&w, 120 min. In Japanese with English subtitles.
