[SHICHININ NO SAMURAI] [七人の侍]
Hailed as one of the greatest films of all time, SEVEN SAMURAI has spawned imitations, including THE WILD BUNCH and 1960’s THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, but remains unsurpassed in its virtuosity. Farmers in a small hamlet hire seven samurai to protect them from pillagers. Though the village can only offer food in payment, each samurai takes on the near-suicidal mission for his own personal reasons. Filmmaker Akira Kurosawa’s star and key collaborator, actor Toshirō Mifune, cites his role in this film as his all-time favorite. Future superstar Tatsuya Nakadai has a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo as a samurai wandering through the town, marking his first collaboration with Kurosawa; although the shot lasts for only three seconds, Kurosawa had Nakadai repeat the take over an entire day of shooting until the actor’s gait was just right. DIR/SCR Akira Kurosawa; SCR Shinobu Hashimoto, Hideo Oguni; PROD Sōjirō Motoki. Japan, 1954, b&w, 217 min. including a 15-min. intermission. In Japanese with English subtitles. NOT RATED
