Dziga Vertov's groundbreaking 1929 experimental documentary about Soviet life is also a treatise on filmmaking. Amazingly filmed and astonishingly edited, the film employs a vast range of pioneering cinematic techniques (multiple exposures, slow motion, fast motion, montage, freeze frames, split screens, tracking shots, jump cuts and more) in its depiction of daily life in the Ukrainian cities of Kyiv and Odessa. Banned in the Soviet Union, it has since become one of the most celebrated and influential films of all time, and remains fresh and exciting today. DIR/SCR/PROD Dziga Vertov. USSR, 1929, b&w, 68 min.
