Hong Kong Cinema Classics
November 1–25
Having birthed Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan, wuxia and kung fu, Hong Kong has long been the home of action cinema. As the swords and martial arts styles of the ‘60s and ‘70s gave way to hard-hitting stunt choreography, the Golden Princess Film Production company ushered in a new wave of gritty Hong Kong filmmaking in the mid-1980s. Golden Princess launched the careers of filmmakers John Woo and Tsui Hark, who pioneered the genre of “heroic bloodshed” films: movies concerned with duty, honor and brotherhood, often set against the never-ending war between cops and mobsters. Featuring breakout roles for international stars like Chow Yun-Fat and Tony Leung Chiu-wai, these long unavailable films finally return to the big screen courtesy of Shout! Studios and GKIDS in new 4K restorations sourced from the original camera negatives.
