THE BATTLE FOR LAIKIPIA
Special Features: Co-presented by the Environmental Film Festival in the Nation’s Capital
On the picturesque Laikipia Plateau, the nomadic Samburu people have led their cows and goats to graze for centuries. But when a climate change-effected drought forces them to search further afield for food and water, they find their once-traditional routes blocked by fences and armed guards belonging to the descendants of British colonialists. Filmmakers Peter Murimi and Daphne Matziaraki spent five years embedded in the region, crafting a searing documentary — winner of the Producers Award for Nonfiction at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival — that follows rising tensions as the climate crisis and the legacy of colonialism collide. Official Selection, 2024 Tribeca Film Festival. DIR Peter Murimi; DIR/PROD Daphne Matziaraki; PROD Toni Kamau. Kenya/U.S./Greece, 2024, color, 94 min. In Samburu, English and Swahili with English subtitles. NOT RATED
