NATURAL PHENOMENA
[FENÓMENOS NATURALES]
In late-1980s Cuba, local nurse Vilma is a crack shot eager to enter the national skeet shooting competition. The prize money would help fulfill her dream of a bigger, comfier home to care for her injured husband and raise their child on the way. Unfortunately for her, pregnant women are barred from competing, dashing her hopes — until a freak tornado whisks her over the rainbow to Niña Bonita, the isle hosting the tournament. Donning a blue dress and red slippers, Vilma sets out to prove her mettle in a strange land. This Cuban riff on THE WIZARD OF OZ from director Marcos Díaz Sosa, adapted from his own short film, is a whimsical yet heartfelt story of a young woman seeking the best for her family and learning that a certain maxim is often true: there's no place like home. DIR/SCR Marcos Díaz Sosa; PROD Maria Carla Del Rio. Cuba/Argentina/France, 2024, color, 80 min. In Spanish with English subtitles. NOT RATED
