THE RYE HORN Watch Trailer

THE RYE HORN

[O CORNO]
In a small fishing village in 1970s Galicia, María (Janet Novás) is a midwife, assisting women through the hardships of natural birth. But occasionally, she is also called upon to perform abortions, strictly illegal in Francoist Spain, utilizing a fungus that grows on the rye crop to induce the procedure. When a terrible accident occurs, she is forced to flee. Heading to the border with Portugal to escape trouble with the authorities, she relies on a new community of women who are willing to help her along the way. Novás gives a smoldering performance in her screen debut, calling upon her background as a dancer and choreographer to give María a powerful presence. Filmmaker Jaione Camborda's earthy drama won Best Film at the 2023 San Sebastian Film Festival. Official Selection, 2023 Toronto Film Festival. DIR/SCR/PROD Jaione Camborda; PROD Andrea Vázquez, María Zamora. Spain/Portugal/Belgium, 2023, color, 105 min. In Galician and Portuguese with English subtitles. NOT RATED
