MILONGA (2023)
Special Features: U.S. Premiere. Post-screening reception sponsored by the Embassy of Uruguay on Sept. 23
Luminous Chilean actress Paulina García (GLORIA, LITTLE MEN) stars as Rosa, a downtrodden widow who turns to tango to shake up her stale routine. Afraid to make any changes six months after her husband's death, Rosa leads a lonely existence, made worse by the fact that her son is behind bars and refusing to speak to her. But when she runs into an old friend, she learns of a new milonga (Argentine tango dance party) in town and begins to break out of her shell with help from her handyman-turned-love interest Juan (César Troncoso, CLANDESTINE CHILDHOOD, THE POPE'S TOILET). Ultimately, old habits die hard, and she'll have to confront her troubled past if she wants a chance at happiness. In her feature debut, writer/director Laura González worked with Pablo Larraín's regular cinematographer Sergio Armstrong (EMA, NO) to find the quiet beauty in Rosa's life, assisted in no small part by a stellar performance from García, who masters a flawless Uruguayan accent. DIR/SCR/PROD Laura González. Uruguay/Argentina, 2023, color, 106 min. In Spanish with English subtitles. NOT RATED
