GUAPO'Y

In director Sofía Paoli Thorne's meditative documentary, Celsa recounts life under the brutal Paraguayan military dictatorship of Alfredo Stroessner, the longest such rule in the South American continent. Pregnant at the time with her son, Celsa was imprisoned and tortured along with her husband and mother. Forty-five years later, she homebrews herbal remedies to heal the deep-rooted scars in her body and soul. Told via tender, emotional interviews and lush cinematography, GUAPO'Y is a testament to the survivors and, with the current government openly praising the brutal regime, a reminder of Paraguay's dark legacy. Official Selection, 2023 True/False, Málaga film festivals. DIR/SCR/PROD Sofía Paoli Thorne; PROD Gabriela Cueto, Federico Pozzi, Nadia Martínez. Paraguay/Argentina, 2022, color, 71 min. In Spanish and Guarani with English subtitles. NOT RATED
