TOBACCO BARNS

Special Features: Spanish Cinema Now Opening Night selection. Post-screening reception on Opening Night, June 2

[SECADEROS]
In rural Granada, among the picturesque tobacco plantations, seven-year-old Vera spends the summer visiting her grandparents, seeing wonder and magic around every corner. But angsty local teen Nieves feels trapped — by her high school boyfriend, her job working in the fields and her small-town life. On an adventurous journey of self-discovery, both girls will be connected to a magical creature that will change the way they see their own realities. In her award-winning narrative feature debut, filmmaker Rocio Mesa found inspiration in her own childhood and the films of Hayao Miyazaki, working with Oscar®-winning duo David Martí and Montse Ribé (PAN'S LANYRINTH) to dream up the mythical tobacco monster at the center of this sensitive coming-of-age tale. Dunia Ayaso Award, 2022 San Sebastián Film Festival; Audience Award, Visions, 2023 SXSW Film Festival. DIR/SCR Rocio Mesa; PROD Olmo Figueredo González-Quevedo. Spain, 2022, color, 98 min. In Spanish with English subtitles. NOT RATED
