SCANDAL IN PARIS, A
A personal favorite of Douglas Sirk, A SCANDAL IN PARIS stars George Sanders (who would go on to win an Oscar® in 1951 for ALL ABOUT EVE) as the 18th-century crook-turned-police chief Eugène François Vidocq. Stealing, cheating and seducing his way into Parisian high society, Vidocq becomes a renowned criminologist and then the head of the Sûreté. With the cops under his control and the city in his hands, he plans the ultimate heist — but the wiles of a young woman threaten to bring it all crashing down. Based on Vidocq's own memoirs, Sirk brought his European sensibilities to this twisty comedy of manners, featuring one of Sanders' best performances. DIR Douglas Sirk; SCR Ellis St. Joseph, based on the memoirs of Eugène-François Vidocq; PROD Arnold Pressburger. U.S., 1946, b&w, 100 min. NOT RATED
