SUZUME

[SUZUME NO TOJIMARI] [すずめの戸締まり]
Makoto Shinkai's (WEATHERING WITH YOU, YOUR NAME) latest anime is a fantastical coming-of-age adventure influenced by the Great East Japan Earthquake that devastated the country's eastern seaboard in 2011. On her way to school in a quiet town in Kyushu, 17-year-old Suzume encounters a young man who tells her, "I'm looking for a door." Directing him to an abandoned resort nearby, Suzume follows him and finds a single weathered door standing upright in its frame amid the ruins. Seemingly drawn by its power, she reaches for the knob... Soon, doors begin to open all across Japan in various disaster-stricken locations, unleashing destruction on all who are near. Guided by the mysterious doors, Suzume must journey across the land and attempt to close these portals to prevent further disaster. SUZUME was a box office smash in Japan and became the first anime since 2002's SPIRITED AWAY to screen in competition at the Berlin Film Festival. DIR/SCR Makoto Shinkai; PROD Kôichirô Itô, Genki Kawamura. Japan, 2022, color, 122 min. NOT RATED
