LUPIN III: THE CASTLE OF CAGLIOSTRO
Special Features: 4K Restoration
[RUPAN SANSEI: KARIOSUTORO NO SHIRO] [ルパン三世 カリオストロの城]
Hayao Miyazaki's feature-length directorial debut is a rousing adventure rife with comedy, exhilarating action sequences and genuine heart, starring the most famous character from manga artist Monkey Punch, the master thief Lupin III. When the cash plundered during his latest casino heist turns out to be counterfeit, Lupin heads to the micronation of Cagliostro with partner-in-crime Jigen to exact revenge. The plan goes awry, and they find themselves rescuing royal damsel-in-distress Clarisse from the clutches of Count Cagliostro, whose thirst for power compels him to marry Clarisse and recover the secret treasures of the Castle of Cagliostro. Lupin and Jigen are aided by the unpredictable lady thief Fujiko and the swordsman Goemon, but standing in their way is long-time nemesis Inspector Zenigata. In addition to directing duties, Miyazaki served as a co-writer, designer and storyboard artist for the film, which contains elements that would become mainstays in his later Studio Ghibli era, including meticulously drawn landscapes, vivid colors and intricately realized airplane designs. DIR/SCR Hayao Miyazaki; SCR Haruya Yamazaki; PROD Tetsuo Katayama. Japan, 1979, color, 100 min. In Japanese with English subtitles. NOT RATED
