PUPILS, THE
[LE PUPILLE]
Loosely based on a letter from Italian novelist Elsa Morante to her friend Goffredo Fofi, this mischievous holiday fable directed by Alice Rohrwacher (HAPPY AS LAZZARO, THE WONDERS) is set at Christmas in a Catholic boarding school for orphaned girls. It's winter in Italy and World War II rages on. Mother Superior (Alba Rohrwacher, Alice's sister and long-time collaborator) rules over her pupils with a firm hand and a stoic gaze, but when they are gifted an irresistible red cake — a zuppa inglese — it sparks rebellion (and the possibility of kindness) among the girls and their caretakers alike. Shot in 16mm and produced by Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón, THE PUPILS brings Rohrwacher's boundless imagination and exquisite artistry to the delightful Christmastime story of a few bad girls who change the course of one cake's fate. (Note adapted from the Mill Valley Film Festival.) Official Selection, 2022 AFI FEST, Cannes, Telluride and Toronto film festivals. DIR/SCR Alice Rohrwacher; PROD Carlo Cresto-Dina, Alfonso Cuarón, Gabriela Rodriguez. Italy/U.S., 2022, color, 38 min. In Italian with English subtitles. RATED PG
