Special Features: 2023 Oscar® Selection, Latvia
[JANVĀRIS]
Veteran Latvian director Viesturs Kairišs' semi-autobiographical ode to love, war and cinema won Best International Narrative Feature at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival. It's 1991 and the Latvians are pushing for independence as the USSR is starting to crumble. Jazis (Kārlis Arnolds Avots) is an aspiring filmmaker, attending art school by day and filming the Soviet occupation by night. He meets fellow Jim Jarmusch obsessive Anna (Alise Dzene) and the two start a clumsy first romance. But their fling comes to a halt as the reality of their situation can no longer be ignored and they struggle to figure out their purpose on the battlefield. Deploying arresting Academy ratio cinematography, Kairišs seamlessly inserts actual archival and period footage to create an engrossing coming-of-age drama. DIR/SCR Viesturs Kairišs; SCR Andris Feldmanis, Livia Ulman; PROD Inese Boka-Grube, Gints Grube. Latvia/Lithuania/Poland, 2022, color, 97 min. In Latvian, Lithuanian and Russian with English subtitles. NOT RATED
