WOODCUTTER STORY, THE
[METSURIN TARINA]
In a snowy Finnish fishing village, Pepe (Jarkko Lahti, THE HAPPIEST DAY IN THE LIFE OF OLLI MÄKI) leads an unremarkable yet blessed life. He has a good job at the local sawmill, where he gets to spend all day with his best friend Tuomas (Hannu-Pekka Björkman, THE OTHER SIDE OF HOPE) before returning home to his wife and young son. But when the sawmill suddenly closes, his life goes up in flames. Cursed by increasingly bizarre bad luck, Pepe maintains an unfaltering positive attitude, even as the world crumbles around him. Imagine David Lynch's TWIN PEAKS by way of Aki Kaurismäki and you might get close to the delightfully deadpan surrealism at the core of Mikko Myllylahti's (screenwriter on THE HAPPIEST DAY IN THE LIFE OF OLLI MÄKI) 35mm-shot directorial debut. Official Selection, 2022 Cannes, London and Chicago film festivals. DIR/SCR Mikko Myllylahti; PROD Emilia Haukka, Jussi Rantamäki. Finland/Netherlands/Denmark/Germany, 2022, color, 99 min. In Finish with English subtitles. NOT RATED
