KALEV
Special Features: North American Premiere. 2023 Oscar® Selection, Estonia
Summer, 1990. The collapse of the Soviet Union is imminent, but the USSR Premiere Basketball League is ready to begin a new championship season. With their country striving to regain its independence and societal support for the USSR waning, the Estonian national team, Kalev, must decide whether they want to participate in the competition or take a stand against the Soviet Union. Led by headstrong coach Jaak Salumets (Mait Malmsten) and the impassioned team captain, Aivar Kuusmaa (Reimo Sagor, TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT), Kalev goes against public opinion and laces up, hoping for a shot at the title. But a string of defeats and rising political tensions call the season into question. Do they have what it takes to rebound and become legends? Filmmaker Ove Musting makes his feature debut with this rousing and timely sports drama, based on a true story. DIR/SCR Ove Musting; SCR Martin Algus, Mehis Pihla; PROD Maria Avdjushko, Pille Rünk.
