THE AWFUL TRUTH (1937)
Divorcing couple Jerry and Lucy Warriner (Cary Grant and Irene Dunne) are both guilty of wandering ways, and the divorce becomes final if they are not reconciled within the year. As Jerry dallies with showgirl Dixie Belle Lee (Joyce Compton) and Lucy goes a-courtin' with oilman Dan Leeson (Ralph Bellamy), will the two spouses realize they're made for each other, before it's too late? Director Leo McCarey's improv-oriented approach created great comic spontaneity on set, and the zany results still zing on screen. Great supporting work comes from Cecil Cunningham as wisecracking Aunt Patsy, Esther Dale as meddlesome Mrs. Leeson, Alexander D'Arcy as unctuous Armand Duvalle and the antics of THE THIN MAN's dog Skippy a.k.a. Asta (here playing "Mr. Smith"). The film received six Oscar® nominations including Best Picture, with McCarey winning Best Director. DIR/PROD Leo McCarey; SCR Viña Delmar, from the play by Arthur Richman. U.S., 1937, b&w, 92 min. NOT RATED
