FEATHERS (2021)
Winner of the Critics' Week Grand Prize at Cannes, Egyptian director Omar El Zohairy's controversial feature debut is a bitingly Kafkaesque comedy satirizing the Egyptian patriarchy, social inequity and the subjugation of women. When a magic trick goes awry at a child's birthday party, the authoritative father of a financially struggling family is turned into a chicken. With no one able to reverse the spell and return the man to his human form, an avalanche of absurdities befalls the family he has left behind. The mother, whose already overburdened existence was dedicated to her husband and children, is now urged to come to the fore and provide for her family alone. While moving heaven and earth to bring her husband back and secure the family's survival, she undergoes a transformation of her own. Winner, Critics' Week Grand Prize and FIPRESCI Prize, 2021 Cannes Film Festival; Winner, Best Film, Best First Work, Best Screenplay and Best Actress, 2021 Carthage Film Festival; Winner, Best Arab Film and Variety Award, 2021 El Gouna Film Festival; Winner, Special Jury Award, 2021 Torino Film Festival.
