SOUNDER
Special Features: 50th Anniversary
Recently added to the U.S. National Film Registry by the Library of Congress, SOUNDER was a critical and commercial success in 1972, earning Oscar® nominations for Best Picture, Actor (Paul Winfield), Actress (Cicely Tyson) and Adapted Screenplay. Set in Depression-era rural Louisiana, it's the story of the Morgans — and their beloved dog, Sounder — a strong and loving African American family of sharecroppers who face a crisis after their father, Nathan (Winfield), is sent to jail for stealing food to feed his family. Mother Rebecca (Tyson) works twice as hard to tend the farm and keep the family together, along with eldest son David (Kevin Hooks), who must put his dreams of getting an education on hold in order to help the family.
