FLEE (2021)
Danish filmmaker Jonas Poher Rasmussen (SEARCHING FOR BILL, WHAT HE DID) uses a visually dazzling range of animation styles to breathe life into the true story of his friend Amin Nawabi (a pseudonym), a young man who fled Taliban-ruled Afghanistan as a child refugee, went into hiding in Russia and ultimately came of age in Denmark, his adopted homeland. Now in his 30s, Nawabi shares previously untold stories about his life's journey, describing the conditions that forced his family to escape Afghanistan and going on to reveal how he grappled with his identity as a closeted young gay man, before building a life in Denmark with his soon-to-be husband. Visually and narratively daring, filled with moments of humor, high drama and intimate revelation, FLEE comes at a moment when the resurgence of the Taliban in Afghanistan makes Nawabi's complex story more relevant than ever.
