WITHNAIL & I
In the words of Withnail, "We want the finest wines available to humanity! We want them here and we want them now!" But we'll settle for the finest of cult classic films. In his screen debut, beloved British actor Richard E. Grant (star of this year's CAN YOU EVER FORGIVE ME?) put Bruce Robinson's (HOW TO GET AHEAD IN ADVERTISING) wickedly funny road movie on the map as right-of-passage viewing for students and midnight movie devotees. Grant is the insufferable, perennially intoxicated and infinitely quotable Withnail. Together with his fellow unemployed actor, the much put-upon I aka Marwood (Paul McGann), Withnail decides to quit the drunken, druggy madness of Camden, London, for the rejuvenating tranquility of the countryside, and a stay at the cottage of his louche uncle (Richard Griffiths). But this holiday is not quite the restful experience the pair had hoped for. DIR/SCR Bruce Robinson; PROD Paul M. Heller. UK, 1987, color, 107 min. RATED R
