Carl Theodor Dreyer's most famous film, THE PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC features an unforgettable performance by French actress Renée Falconetti as the Maid of Orléans. Beginning with the recently captured warrior about to stand trial under French clergymen loyal to the British crown, Dreyer tells a "Stations of the Cross"-type tale of the martyr's path to transcendence, as Joan remains resolute despite the deprivations of prison and the deceptions of her prosecutors. Moody chiaroscuro lighting, maze-like sets and various extreme close-ups of the emotive Falconetti create intense images, forging strong sympathy between viewer and saint. #9 on the BFI's 50 Greatest Films of All Time. DIR/SCR Carl Theodor Dreyer; SCR Joseph Delteil. France, 1928, b&w, 110 min. NOT RATED
