HARVEY GIRLS, THE (1946)

Susan Bradley (Judy Garland) goes West as a mail-order bride "On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe," but when the gig proves a bust she gets a waitressing job at a Harvey House railroad restaurant in New Mexico. Tensions soon rise between the goody two-shoes Harvey Girls and the town's other faction of available young women: the saloon girls, led by boisterous Em (Angela Lansbury). This somewhat lesser-known musical from MGM's legendary Arthur Freed unit features delightful songs by Harry Warren and Johnny Mercer. The cast includes John Hodiak, Marjorie Main, Ray Bolger, Preston Foster and dance legend Cyd Charisse in her first speaking role.
