POPEYE
Although successful at the box office and in the hearts of younger viewers, Robert Altman’s POPEYE was traduced by critics and has somehow been misremembered as an expensive flop. (Perhaps tales about its notoriously drug-fueled production in Malta tainted the opinion of some reviewers?) But the film holds up quite well for those in the know, thanks to a game cast led by Robin Williams as the spinach-powered sailorman and Shelley Duvall as his main squeeze, Olive Oyl; colorful, comic strip–inspired set design and costumes; and excellent songs by Harry Nilsson.
