Todd Haynes’ homage to Douglas Sirk’s style of social critique by way of melodrama masterfully tells the story of a well-to-do suburban Connecticut couple in the 1950s, straitjacketed by convention but desperate to live the lives they really want. Frank Whitaker (Dennis Quaid, in one of the best performances of his career) is a closeted, alcoholic business exec, reduced to furtive couplings on the down low; his wife, Cathy (Julianne Moore), is strongly attracted to their enterprising and erudite Black gardener, Raymond (Dennis Haysbert), but is unsure how to relate to him as a person, let alone as a woman to a man. One of Haynes’ most celebrated films, FAR FROM HEAVEN won dozens of festival and end-of-year critics awards and was nominated for four Academy Awards®. DIR/SCR Todd Haynes; PROD Jody Allen, Christine Vachon. U.S., 2002, color, 107 min. RATED PG-13
