WINDLESS
Special Features: U.S. Premiere
[BEZVETRIE] [БЕЗВЕТРИЕ]
After a self-imposed exile abroad, the heavily tattooed Kaloyan (celebrated rapper Ognyan Pavlov, a.k.a. FYRE, in a riveting performance) returns to the Bulgarian village of his childhood to handle the sale of his recently deceased — and estranged — father’s flat. The routine task is complicated by the news that the cemetery housing his father’s remains (and his grandparents’) will be bulldozed to make way for a combination golf course/spa/casino that will supposedly revitalize the economically impoverished region. At first, Kaloyan bluntly declares the corpses should be placed in one grave and that will be that. But as he helps the other residents move out of their own apartments and listens to legendary stories about his father, the taciturn man begins to wrestle with the childhood trauma rooted deep within his heart. The sophomore feature from director Pavel G. Vesnakov, WINDLESS is a deeply moving exploration of family legacy, filial duty and reconciliation. Cinematographer Orlin Ruevski shoots in a square 1:1 aspect ratio that is both a magnificent feat of filmmaking and an apt metaphor for the claustrophobia and isolation felt by the film's protagonist. –Javier Chavez
