HARVEST
Special Features: Special Presentation
In the bucolic British countryside, a hard-scrabble community of medieval farmers are fiercely protective of their own and intensely wary of outsiders. But one such outsider has become a vital part of their village, Walter Thirsk (Caleb Landry Jones). The childhood friend and servant of the village’s foolishly softhearted landowner, Master Kent (Harry Melling), Thirsk has come to love his adopted home. But the unexpected arrival of first a mapmaker and then Kent’s predatory cousin signal the coming of the industrial revolution and the ultimate destruction of their simplistic way of life. Acclaimed Greek auteur Athina Rachel Tsangari’s (CHEVALIER, AFI FEST 2015) first film in almost a decade is a ferocious adaptation of Jim Crace’s novel. Inspired by 1970s cinema and recalling the pastoral paintings of Bruegel, Tsangari and cinematographer Sean Price Williams shot the film on gritty 16mm, bringing lush, hazy visuals to this darkly funny and intoxicating period piece. –Josh Gardner
